Used beverage cartons, including Tetra Pak packaging, combine paperboard with plastic and, in many aseptic cartons, a thin aluminum layer. Recycling these multilayer materials requires a process that separates recoverable paper fibers from the remaining plastic-aluminum fraction, known as PolyAl. A dedicated carton recycling plant uses mechanical preparation, pulping, screening and dewatering to recover these material streams for further processing.
The process begins with baled waste beverage cartons, which may contain sand, grit, and other contaminants. Pre-shredding reduces carton size, while washing removes loose impurities and prepares the material for downstream treatment. The prepared cartons then enter a pulping and separation stage, where water and mechanical action release paper fibers from the composite packaging.

The resulting mixture passes through a paper–PolyAl separator and a pulp reject separator to separate recoverable fibers from the residual plastic-aluminum material. A dewatering drum screen removes excess water from the separated material streams, while a pulp filter press further dewaters the recovered paper fiber. The process produces two main outputs: recovered paper fiber and PolyAl, which can be sent for further processing or recycling according to their composition and quality.
The performance of a Tetra Pak recycling machine depends on feedstock quality, contamination levels, processing capacity, and separation efficiency. Washing and screening requirements should be determined by the condition of the incoming cartons, while the pulping and dewatering stages must be matched to the desired output quality and moisture content. Because carton structures vary, the actual proportions of paperboard, polymers, and aluminum also depend on the packaging type.
For recyclers handling used beverage cartons, an integrated recycling line can combine pre-shredding, washing, fiber separation and dewatering in a coordinated process. When selecting a Tetra Pak carton recycling plant, key considerations include throughput, water consumption, wastewater treatment, fiber recovery, PolyAl handling, and the requirements of downstream material buyers. These factors help determine the appropriate equipment configuration and the commercial value of the recovered materials.
